Tectonics of Cerberus Fossae unveiled by marsquakes

چکیده
The InSight mission has measured Mars' seismicity since February 2018 and allowed to investigate tectonics on another planet. Seismic data shows that most of the widely distributed surface faults are not seismically active, is mostly originating from a single graben structure, Cerberus Fossae. We show both major families marsquakes characterized by low high frequency content, LF HF events respectively, located central eastern parts this system. hypocenters at 15-50 km depth spectral character suggests structurally weak, potentially warm source region consistent with recent volcanic activity those depths. occur in brittle, shallow part crust might originate fault planes associated flanks. Estimated magnitudes between 2.8 3.8, resulting total seismic moment release within Fossae 1.4-5.6 $\times10^{15}$ Nm/yr, or least half observed value entire Our findings confirm represents unique tectonic setting shaped current day processes, implications for minimum local heat flow.

متن کاملMartian floods at Cerberus Fossae can be produced by groundwater discharge
[1] Young flood channels emanate from Cerberus Fossae, Mars. In order to determine whether subsurface aquifers can discharge water sufficiently fast to explain these flood features, I develop a model that couples groundwater flow in a sub-cryosphere aquifer with flow through a fissure that penetrates from the surface to the aquifer. The model is constrained by estimates of peak discharge, and t...

[1] The 2016 NASA InSight lander is the first planetary mission designed to study the deep interior of Mars. InSight’s Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS) package will quantify global and regional seismic activity and determine parameters like core properties, mantle composition, and Martian lithospheric thickness. An improved understanding of the location, magnitude, and frequency...
متن کاملGeneration of recent massive water floods at Cerberus Fossae, Mars by dike emplacement, cryospheric cracking, and confined aquifer groundwater release
[1] Previous studies noted the close association of geologically very recent lava flows and fluvial channels emanating from Cerberus Fossae. To assess these relationships, we outline a model of magmatic dike emplacement that involves 1) surface fractures and localized volcanic eruptions, 2) attendant cryospheric cracking to fracture the surface and release pressurized groundwater confined benea...
